Heather Kreiter’s stunning traditional oil paintings appeared on over 40 Warlord cards beginning with Warlord’s first ever set Saga of the Storm and continued through each subsequent arc of the game. Her work is especially found on the action and item card types with the Wizard escape spell Blink and Clerical healing spell Scourge of Dythanus being some of her more notable cards.

What got you interested in artwork in general and why was it gel pens? What was your first foray into illustration and how did that come about?

Crayons man, CRAYONS!!! That way when you realize you hate your creation with every fiber of your being, you have an instant candle!

I've loved fantasy art, creatures, what have you, since I was about 11 (unicorns were a big deal in the 80's). The Dragonlance books (and their art by Larry Elmore) were the official catalyst for me wanting to be a fantasy illustrator. Larry, Clyde Caldwell, Jeff Easley, and Fred Fields (all of my favorites) all did their illustrations in oils so that's what I wanted to focus on in college, to become an oil painter, just like them.

My very first ever assignment was with AEG back in 2000. Gift of the Thunderbird for Doomtown. It was right after meeting an art director from AEG at Origins who gave me a brutal portfolio review, so I was honestly surprised when he emailed to give me work.

How did you come to hear about and work on Warlord? Were you black-mailed into it?

After my one card I did with Doomtown, I started working on 7th Sea. As I was already working with AEG, their art director asked if I'd want to work on a more fantasy based game. My answer was a resounding YES! Fantasy is what I'd been wanting to work on all along. There was a small part of me that was afraid I'd curse the game though. After my one card with Doomtown, the game went under. The same thing happened with 7th Sea! I was afraid if I worked on Warlord, it'd be doomed too!

Did you get assigned specific races, factions, or classes? What kinds of images did you enjoy creating the most and why?

*flips through book of card samples* No, not really. However, I did start to get assigned weapons and amulets more often about a year into the game. I've always been into jewelry design so I was okay with that. My preferred card subject were ones that were more intimate where the card would focus on a single object or individual. I've never enjoyed working on action scenes or ones with a lot going on. It's always very obvious if I was working on a card that I really didn't like. I'd put it off to the very end so I'd then have to rush to finish it (I'm lookin' at you Rain of Shards).

What's it like rediscovering pieces you did decades ago - do you notice a significant change in your style then and now? Looking back over them, do any of your contributions to Warlord stick out as your favorite?

Oof, yeah... some of this is pretty painful. I was such a baby illustrator when this game first came out. I was still working a day job, taking care of my daughter (who was a toddler at the time), and then working on assignments into the wee hours of morning. My style has most definitely changed from then and now. In '07 I started working in markers (for my My Little Demon line) while I was working in oils for freelance assignments. Now I'm almost exclusively working in acrylics and I'm not nearly as reference heavy as I was back then. I also only create art for myself, no more commissions or freelance work for me.

I think two of my favorite designs were Kun Amulet and Fire of God. Both gave me the opportunity to design some sort of magical item as well as a corresponding character.

We're doing a Warlord art colosseum style battle royale! Who's your champion and why?

Kun Amulet. The lady holding the amulet appears quiet and unassuming, but she's really a demon. I like that she's not what you would expect.

Thanks for answering these and engaging the community in this way! What's going on with you these days? Anything you want to plug?

I'm keeping crazy busy with working on art for my very own card game, My Little Demon: The Unglittering. It features many of my most beloved characters from my MLD line as well as a plethora of new characters. I'm working with the folks over at Pine Box Entertainment, who ironically, have brought Doomtown and 7th Sea back to life. It's going to be 18+ due to adult themes but it'll also be filled with all kinds of horrible puns. You can keep up to date with the art and goings on here: My Little Demon Facebook
