Lisa Hunt is known for her traditional water color depictions of flowing magical energy and softer seeming characters. Her work was used on over 50 cards starting in Warlord’s first ever set Saga of the Storm and included some of the most ubiquitous cards from the game including Meet at the Inn! and Limited Wish.
What got you interested in artwork in general and why was it gel pens? What was your first foray into illustration and how did that come about?
I've been an artist since I was a child. I decided to become an illustrator while in high school and started attending fantasy conventions in the late 1980s. My first big illustration projects were tarot decks. Celtic Dragon Tarot published in 1999 was my biggest seller. At around the same time, I got work in the CCG industry and enjoyed creating card art for the next several years. Other projects included Doomtown, 7th Sea, and Legend of the Five Rings (L5R). I got hooked on watercolors and have been using that medium ever since.
How did you come to hear about and work on Warlord? Were you black-mailed into it?
The art director at AEG at the time hired me. Warlord kept me busy for quite a while. I enjoyed painting a spectrum of characters and scenes for the game.
Did you get assigned specific races, factions, or classes? What kinds of images did you enjoy creating the most and why?
I had a variety of cards assigned to me, including a lot of elves. My favorite piece is The Wind at Your Back. I like the energy that comes across in the art.
What's it like rediscovering pieces you did decades ago - do you notice a significant change in your style then and now? Looking back over them, do any of your contributions to Warlord stick out as your favorite?
I look back and think the Warlord era of my career was very cool. I haven't changed my painting style much since then and feel my works still hold up to the test of time. I think the style did influence some of my subsequent endeavors, such as Fantastical Creatures Tarot and Ghosts & Spirits Tarot that I created a few years later.
What's your best Warlord memory or story?
Back then, I used to paint late into the night. I remember having a tough time winding down after expending all of that creative energy (and I had to get up in the morning to go to a teaching job at the time). I don't have a specific best memory or story, but I do remember loving the challenge of the assignments.
We're doing a Warlord art colosseum style battle royale! Who's your champion and why?
Out of the 7 or more characters I illustrated for Warlord, Allessia the Elf seems like she'd have the best chance in a battle royale. Bring it on!
Thanks for answering these and engaging the community in this way! What's going on with you these days? Anything you want to plug?
I just finished my 9th tarot/oracle deck. I'm preparing a Kickstarter launch (Spring/Summer 2021) for a collector's edition of The Fairy Tale Tarot. After but a single print run, the original edition became highly sought after on the secondary market.
