October Spooky Battlefields

While deckbuilding for the October 2021 4E event, each participant may choose a Battlefield from the ones listed below to start in play with.

What is a Battlefield?

A Battlefield is a card type introduced in 4E to expand one of the 4E Medusan Lord’s text boxes. While a player controls a Battlefield, their Warlord is considered to have the text from the Battlefield in their text box. However, unlike Dungeons or other global effects, Battlefields cannot be directly interacted with and do not occupy a slot in your deck (IE. you must still build a minimum 50-card deck).

Battlefields begin the game in play under the player’s control and are revealed alongside starting armies. Players may not change their battlefield (or any other aspect of their decklist) throughout this event.

October Spooky Battlefields FAQ

  • How does Bog of Bascaron’s static text work? Any printed melee strikes (the numberals in the top left corner) that are less than +2 become +2 instead. And the same for AC less than 12 and Skill less than +2. Stats do not lower, they only increase if they are less than the stated values and only printed values are increased. So if your Monster has a printed ATK of +0 but receives a +5 bonus from Embolden, the Monster would have +7 ATK because the +2 change applies to the +0 printed ATK even though the character is affected by other modifiers.

    Some examples:
Brine Fiend (+0 ATK, 8 AC, +0 Skill) becomes Brine Fiend (+2 ATK, 12 AC, +2 Skill)
Babbling Mouther (+0/+0/+0/+0 ATK, 12 AC, +2 Skill) becomes Babbling Mouther (+2/+2/+2/+2 ATK, 12 AC, +2 Skill)
Kul of Clan Tergoth (+10/+5 ATK, 14 AC, +3 Skill) remains the same as every value is higher than those on the Bog.

  • What does The Barrens of Andover really let me do? Basically it lets you reverse the usage of the Marksmanship and Powerattack feats. Meaning before you target a melee strike, if you have Marksmanship (or gain it through the Barren’s react) you can roll for Marksmanship and add either +5 to the melee strike roll, target a character an additional rank away with the melee strike, or inflict an additional wound with the melee strike. On the Powerattack side, the same is true except you can use it on ranged strikes to inflict an additional wound. Additionally, you can use both Marksmanship and Powerattack on the same melee or ranged strike this way.

  • Does the level gain stack with other level gain effects on the elemental, tactics, poison battlefields? Yes, multiple sources of +1 level for performing a type of action stack. So Wyvernskin Robe on another character and The Deep would allow Brigid to cast Beckon the Sea.

  • Can’t I just use the ability on Yscar Hollow to Barret Yscar order my Warlord every turn? No, the Order on Yscar Hollow specifies “non-Lycanthrope Free Kingdoms” but gives the target the Lycanthrope trait permanently. So after you activate it once, that character becomes a Lycanthrope.

  • Can I spend opposing Dwarf Warlords with Caverns of Flesh and Stone? Nope, the spend part is before the colon meaning it’s a cost and costs can only be paid by cards you control.

  • How do Dhamir il Maliq and Thalaasa interact with the Fire and Water battlefields respectively? Dhamir makes all his actions that produce melee strikes into Fire actions, and the Magmatic Mausoleum gives him +1 level for performing Fire actions and lets him perform them regardless of class. This means that Dhamir is +1 level for and can use any action that produces a melee strike while paired with Magmatic Mausoleum. Meaning he could use Teshur’s Thunderfist and Slash and Lunge. Similarly Thalaasa turns her spells into Water actions, so paired with The Deep which lets your characters use Water actions regardless of class, she would gain access to all Cleric spells (Cleric actions) meaning she could use cards like Speed of the Falcon and Bandage despite their not having the printed Water trait.

  • What constitutes a Air/Fire/Water/Poison etc. action? Two things cause an action to be Air, Poison, etc. and would thus trigger The Banshee’s Peak or Toxic Root Forest or the other elemental battlefields. One, an action card with the corresponding printed trait such as Chain Lightning for Air or Plague Bomb for Poison count as an “Air action” or a “Poison action”. Secondly, if the card states “This is an Air action.” or “This is a Poison action.” it counts as an Air or Poison action. Examples of this are Chaltak and Daemon Bile. Just because a card generates a type of save, Poison save for instance, does not mean that it is a Poison action - regardless of whether the word Poison is in bold or not. Examples include Ghast and Dreadfang.

  • Does Elemental Bolt count as all of the elemental options for the purpose of the battlefields that allow characters to use off-class actions? Yes, yes it does.
